Hi, I’m Sam.
Welcome to my online home, where I share my writing and newsletter.
My ten second bio:
I founded SoilSymbiotics, where I consult on regenerative agriculture for leading ag and food companies, development agencies, investment funds, and farmers across scales.
I'm currently Head of Agronomy at Row 7 Seed Company and Senior Agronomist with Soil Capital Farming
17 years of field experience across 13 countries working with 300+ farms, specializing in coffee, cacao, organic vegetables, and citrus systems.
Current projects include establishing regenerative coffee demonstration farms in Colombia, Peru, and Guatemala, and founding the Regenerative Coffee Guild, a science-based, farmer-focused organization advancing the technical development of regenerative coffee systems
I write The Confluence on Substack. My writing has also appeared in Acres US, Daily Coffee News, Cherry Bones, the German policy journal Tagesspiegel Background, and others.
Over the past decade and a half, I've worked across 13 countries with more than 300 farms, from smallholder coffee cooperatives to blue chip multinational ag and food companies. I help farms improve crop quality and soil health by applying first principles of soil microbiology, plant nutrition, and ecological function. This work has given me detailed understanding of how agricultural operations function across scales—from the biological processes governing disease resistance and nutrient cycling to the economic constraints shaping management decisions.
My current work includes leading agronomic development at Row 7 Seed Company, where I optimize soil conditions to maximize genetic expression in specialty crop varietals, and serving as Senior Agronomist with Soil Capital Farming, where I design regenerative transition strategies for large-scale tree crop operations. I founded the Regenerative Coffee Guild, a science-based organization focused on advancing the technical development of regenerative coffee systems through farmer collaboration and rigorous field research.
I write The Confluence on Substack, examining agriculture, ecology, food, and health through systems-level analysis. My writing explores how soil microbial communities regulate crop performance, how nutritional biochemistry shapes human health outcomes, and how agricultural practices cascade through environmental and economic systems. I work to understand these domains by identifying underlying mechanisms and synthesizing evidence across disciplines—connecting what happens at the rhizosphere to what appears on our plates and in our ecosystems.
